Grosseto – charming Tuscan town hidden in the shadow of Siena, Florence and Pisa

Grosseto is a town that has preserved its medieval charm and definitely worth a visit. It is the capital of the eponymous province which can be found in the south of Tuscany, situated in the valley of the Ombrone river.

Grosseto – a centre of Maremma Toscana area, can not be compared with the famous Tuscan towns, such as Siena, Florence or Pisa. However, the whole province is still full of ancient traditions, reflected in the local sights.

This area is known for its fine wines and delicious olive oil that you can buy on every step in local shops. Once you visit Tuscany you should definitely buy an excellent extra virgin olive oil, Bertolli, being made in the city of Lucca.

You should also taste the Chianti, the most famous red wine from the province of Florence, Siena and Grosseto. The Tuscany is also known for its biscuits with almonds, which are swallowed with liqueur wine.

Then do not forget to try an authentic Italian ice cream, handmade pasta and tropical fruit, which, in Italy, is growing almost everywhere.

Besides swimming in the clear waters of the sea, or sunbathing on sandy beach that can be found about 12 kilometers away of this city, you can also enjoy the charm of a genuine Italian restaurants with typical Italian specialties.

Grosseto is a modern city with lots of greenery, which grow up around the historic core. Inside the old city walls, which are almost fully preserved, you will be pleased with the unique atmosphere, lots of pubs and restaurants with distinctive cuisine.

You can also visit the beautiful churches, museums and other attractions. Archaeological Museum in the city center is one of the most important in Italy as regards the Etruscan era.

The most interesting attractions in Grosseto include a Cathedral (Duomo di Grosseto), dedicated to San Lorenzo, from 1294 and also a Museum of Archaeology and Art of the Maremma with findings from Prehistoric period, primarily Etruscan and Roman Times.

Grosseto, like many other Italian cities, is busy especially in the summer when the city holds lots of cultural events. Classical music, jazz or pop can be enjoyed on many festivals; there are also theater performances and variety shows. The nearby Marina di Grosseto is a seaside resort, which is surrounded by Maremma nature reserve and long beaches with sand dunes. The resort is connected to the neighboring Principina a Mare by a beautiful natural pine park. The area is suitable for walking, biking or jogging.

It is conveniently positioned for trips to Saturnia, a resort with hot springs; or to the town of Montalcino, which is famous for its Brunello wine brand. About 20 km away is the archaeological site of Roselle and Vetulonia.

Nature and surroundings

Beautiful coastal nature is protected by Parco Naturale della Maremma. It is a vast hilly area covered with pine forests and impenetrable bushes. There are herds of wild horses or Maremma cows resembling the African buffaloes with its huge horns.

The local ponds with reeds abound in many water birds. When the soil dries and water retreats (annually in June and July), the landscape is transformed into the real African savannah.
