Metaponto – Greek columns, amphitheaters and temples at the sea

Located in the southern Italy, a small town of Metaponto is the center of an agricultural region of Basilicata. The coastal town is within the Gulf of Taranto washed by the Ionian Sea.

The town was founded by Greeks after the Ionian wars in the 7th century BC as Metapontum and became an important city of Magna Graecia. Thanks to this colorful past there is a number of interesting historical sights.

Metaponto is one of the oldest cities in the region of Basilicata and thus is also popular among tourists. It has two parts, Metaponto Lido is located directly at the sea and is already a seaside resort.

Metaponto itself is attractive architectural treasure. It is home to the large Archaeological Park – the remains of several ancient temples and other monuments.

The ancient temples were dedicated to the Greek gods Aphrodite, Apollo and Athena. But the most important still standing monument is that of Tavole Palatine – temple of the 6th century BC dedicated to the goddess Hera, which resembles Acropolis of Athens.

In addition to the ancient monuments you should not miss a visit to the city castle, where you can learn how the city looked like in the Middle Ages.

Objects and artifacts from Metapontum and its surroundings that were found during archaeological excavations can be seen in the local museum Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Metaponto.
